In a letter to Scotland’s catholic parishes, the Director of the Catholic Parliamentary Office, Anthony Horan has urged catholic members of the BMA to sign an open letter to the organisation urging delegates to the BMA conference next Tuesday (27 June) to reject a motion calling for abortion to be decriminalised.   In the latter Anthony Horan points out that support from the BMA for decriminalisation could open a door to: “Sex-selective abortions, mail-order abortions and the distribution of abortion pills on school premises” Mr Horan’s letter also points out that liberalising abortion law, “would be in stark contrast to the views of the public, the vast majority of whom want to see a reduction in the number of abortions and in the permitted time limit."   ...

In December 2016, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Scotland announced that Helen Liddell would Chair the Independent Review Group (IRG) set up as a result of the McLellan Commission Report into the current safeguarding policies, procedures and practices within the Church in Scotland.   The IRG is an autonomous body which will function separately from the Church and will review safeguarding standards and carry out independent audits as recommended by the McLellan Commission.   The Group met for the first time on 27 May and established working groups to develop and scope the future activities of the IRG. The current membership of the Group is listed below. Further members may be recruited if requirements for additional expertise are identified by the working groups.  ...

The funeral Mass for Eilidh MacLeod, will take place at 11.15am today (Monday 5 June 2017) in the church of Our Lady, Star of the Sea, Castlebay, Barra. Parish Priest, Fr John Paul MacKinnon will celebrate the Mass which will also be relayed to mourners in nearby Castlebay Hall.   In his introduction, Fr. MacKinnon will say:   “My dear brothers and sisters- today we come together here on our beautiful island of Barra as a family, as “one big family”, to pray as a family for our dear beautiful Eilidh MacLeod. Eilidh was taken from us at such a young age- and we are hurting and in pain with the loss of Eilidh from our lives.”   In his homily, Fr.
